The Too Much Information on John’s Health

In July, just before we left to chase the August 1st Solar Eclipse in China, we discovered that John had a 15cm by 14cm x 10cm tumor on his kidney.  Yes, a large one that grew for years.  Since removal and recovery would interfere with the trip, and frankly, I planned to go with or without him, John decided to go on the trip the before addressing the tumor.

After our trip, on September 17th, John went in for surgery to remove the tumor and the involved kidney.  There were some complications in surgery.  The tumor when pulled away from the spleen, tore the spleen, and John lost lots of blood.  The doctors coded him, brought in a specialist who was able to save the spleen and John with the medical equivalent of superglue.  By the end of this ordeal, the doctors replaced 14 pints of blood.  There are 10 pints in the average human body.  Feel free to tease him, like I do, that with the oil change he’s good for another 5000 miles.

Now, three months later, with a prodigious scar, John is fully recovered from the surgery, The other benefit, he has started to lose weight at a normal rate.   He dipped below 300 pounds this year.  Apparently the tumor’s involvement with the kidney all these years added to his struggle to lose weight.  So expect great health progress for him over the next year.

One more note. John asked me to remind you that Marines like to show off two things, their tattoos and scars, since he doesn’t have any tattoos, please don’t ask to see his scar in polite company or at the dinner table.  Again too much information.  Click here to go back to the newsletter.
